THROWBACK THURSDAY: Real Madrid Club de Fútbol were founded 116 years ago
Real Madrid, Los Blancos, were founded 116 years ago and have since go on to become one of the biggest names in world football.
The club was founded following a conflict between members of La Sociedad, also known as Sky Football, the only football club based in Madrid. The conflict caused members to leave and create a new club Nueva Sociedad de Football (New Society of Football). One of the dissenters was Julián Palacios, officially recognised as the first President of Real Madrid, plus Juan Padrós and Carlos Padrós, who eventually became presidents of the great club.
The new club was renamed in 1901 as Madrid Football Club, and after a restructuring a year later, Sky Football was also renamed to New Football Club. Then in March that year, after a new board presided by Juan Padrós had been elected, Madrid Football Club was officially founded.
Since their foundation Real Madrid have won 64 domestic titles; including 33 league trophies and 19 Copa del Rey. Plus 24 European championships; a record 12 Champions League/European Cup and four Super Cups.
